Igniting the Buzz
We have been looking at Product Development. Some products are Fads, some are Niches, and some are here for the long haul. In this assignment, you are to take your knowledge as a marketing professional and predict some of the newest ‘hot’ products in on the market. In other words, you are to find one product that is less than a year old (or has only been available to the general public for less than a year) that is not currently popular, but you think it will become popular and successful.
Your assignment should include:
- Name and description of the product/service (what it does, a picture, price etc)
- EXPLAIN the stage of product development that the product is in. (Remember to see ‘Stages of Product Development’ in your notebook or on pgs 176-177)
- Next you must describe the Products Utility. (Form Utility: material, scent, flavour, colour, design, packaging, Information Utility, Place Utility, Time Utility, Possession Utility) Some of these may not apply to all products
- You must then write a paragraph, using the information that you have presented above, to explain why you think the product will be successful. Remember to take into account how the product is being marketed. Sometimes good products do not sell well if they are marketed poorly and poor products can sell well if they are marketed well.
Here are some links to help get you started finding New Products (You are welcome and encouraged to find products on your own as well)
Great new product site of products that are just hitting the market
New Gadgets from ‘Wired’ Magazine
Slim cream, slim patch etc

Questions
1. How does advertising with models affect women in a negative way?
2. How is Fem-Vertising different?

Congratulations, after receiving an outstanding recommendation from Mr. Southwell, Hurtsville Marketing Inc. has hired you as the new Department Head of the Market Research Division.
Hurtsville Marketing Inc is looking at introducing some new products into the Newton area of Surrey, specifically at Frank Hurt Secondary.
Your Task: It is your job to come up with either a new or existing product or service that the students ages 13-18 would be interested in. You must then make a list of at least five survey questions, multiple choice or yes no type questions are best. You must then ask at least 30 people the questions and record them in chart form. It is best if you ask a variety of different students, from different grades, classes, of different genders etc. (half of them may be from your department {class} but the rest must be from different classes.) Once we have your info, the whole department will look at your results to decide whether or not they agree with your findings.
Corporate Resources: There are 4 different sample charts located on the Frank Hurt Shared Drive: Go into the Frank Hurt Shared Drive, Classes, Mr.Southwell, Consumer Customer Sample Charts. (Always, sometimes, never #1 is my suggested format but you’re the Boss!)
Once you have completed your survey, you are to present your findings using at least one GRAPH (Pie, Bar, Line etc.). You will present your findings on a small poster to be displayed to the rest of the employees in the boardroom (classroom). Include in your poster a clear and concise summary of what you have found out from your survey. Your findings will be discussed at a group meeting with all staff.

Today it is time to perform a Benefit Analysis. That is when you look at your brand specifically and see your benefits of choosing your brand to your customer. This is very useful in creating your advertising strategy because it will help you know what is 'better' about your brand over your competition. By doing this you should start to think about how your brand will be packages, shaped etc. Please see page 202

Now that you know a bit about your competition, it is time to conduct some market research. Since both groups have products that most students are not the target market for, you are not required to actually conduct the research but instead come up with a plan on how you would conduct your research. This must include a series of questions (at least 10) that you would ask in either a survey (postal, phone, internet), face to face interview, focus group or a combination of many. I will check your progress to help you as needed.
